Biographical Record
Athar Husain Rizvi (known as Kaifi Azmi, 1919–2002) abandoned traditional seminary studies to join the Communist Party, working as a union organizer in Bombay textile mills. His poems, collected in 'Jhankar' and 'Awaara Sajde', married exquisite Urdu poetic diction with fiery egalitarian politics.
In Bollywood, Kaifi penned unforgettable humanist lyrics for classic films like 'Pakeezah' and 'Garm Hava'. In his final decades, he returned to his remote ancestral village of Mijwan in Uttar Pradesh, building girls' schools, embroidery centers, and roads to uplift the rural poor.
