Archival Overview
Mississauga Ojibwe chief and Methodist minister who translated the Bible into Ojibwe and toured Britain in traditional regalia to petition the King for native land deeds.
Biographical Record
Kahkewaquonaby ("Sacred Waving Feathers"), English name Peter Jones, was the son of a Welsh surveyor and an Ojibwe woman of the Eagle clan. Raised in traditional Mississaugas ways, Jones converted to Methodism at age twenty-one, becoming the first Indigenous person ordained a Methodist minister in Canada.
Jones built thriving Christian model farming communities at the Credit River and Coldwater, promoting literacy and translating the New Testament and hymnbooks into the Ojibwe language. Traveling to England three times, Jones met Queen Victoria and petitioned King William IV, passionately advocating for unconditional Crown land titles for First Nations.
