Archival Overview

Master violinist and pillar of the Tlemcen Andalusian musical tradition (Gharnati) who preserved centuries of classical Andalusian nubahs, muwashshahat, and hawzi poetry.

Biographical Record

Born in the historic artistic capital of Tlemcen, Kaddour Belkaïd studied under legendary Andalusian masters Cheikh Larbi Bensari and Cheikha Tetma. Mastering the violin held upright on the knee, his bowing technique and melodic memory were legendary across western Algeria.

As musical director of the prestigious Société Gharnata in Tlemcen, he systematically transcribed rare vocal modes and melodic poems that fled Granada in 1492, training generations of Algerian instrumentalists and securing Tlemcen's status as the living sanctuary of Moorish art.
