Archival Overview
Heroic Somba / Ditammari chieftain who led the 1914–1917 Atacora insurrection against French forced labour, colonial recruitment, and taxation in northern Dahomey.
Biographical Record
Kaba was born around 1870 in the rugged Atacora mountain highlands of north-western Dahomey (modern Benin), home to the Ditammari people famed for their fortified earthen two-story castle homes (tata somba).
When French colonial administrators imposed brutal forced labour, poll taxes, and forced conscription of young men to fight in the trenches of World War I, Kaba organized an armed coalition of mountain clans in 1914. Utilizing the natural mountain fortresses and poisoned arrows, his forces defeated several French colonial columns. In April 1917, the French deployed heavy artillery against the Atacora caves; Kaba fell heroically in battle, remaining a national symbol of unyielding resistance.
