Biographical Record
Abu al-Qasim al-Junayd was born in Baghdad of Persian descent, the nephew and disciple of Sari al-Saqati and student of Abu Thawr in Shafi'i law. In a turbulent era when ecstatic mystics risked heresy and execution, Junayd established the mainstream classical tradition of 'sober Sufism' (Sahw).
Junayd taught that mystical union (fana, annihilation in God) must be followed by baqa (abiding in God while fulfilling worldly duties and divine law). Known as 'The Peacock of the Scholars', sixty thousand mourners attended his funeral in Baghdad, and his framework was embraced across the Muslim world.
