Julius Kambarage Nyerere was a Tanzanian anti-colonial activist, political theorist, and statesman who governed Tanganyika as Prime Minister (1961–1962) and President (1962–1964), and later Tanzania (1964–1985). Affectionately known as 'Mwalimu' (Teacher), he promoted African socialism ('Ujamaa'), unified Tanganyika with Zanzibar, established Swahili as national language, and backed anti-apartheid liberation struggles.
