Distinguished English actor famed for his romantic breakthrough as George Emerson in Merchant Ivory's A Room with a View, and bold performances in Warlock, Leaving Las Vegas, Naked Lunch, and The Killing Fields.
Biographical Record
Julian Richard Morley Sands was born in Otley, West Riding of Yorkshire. He trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, gaining early notice in 1984 as British photojournalist Jon Swain in Roland Joffé's Oscar-winning Cambodian drama The Killing Fields.
In 1985, director James Ivory cast Sands as free-spirited, passionate George Emerson opposite Helena Bonham Carter in A Room with a View, an E. M. Forster adaptation that captured eight Academy Award nominations and made Sands an international romantic screen idol. Sands deliberately subverted star categorization, taking dark, daring roles: the title warlock in the 1989 horror classic Warlock, a Swiss entomologist in David Cronenberg's Naked Lunch (1991), and a sadistic Latvian pimp in Mike Figgis's Leaving Las Vegas (1995). A passionate mountaineer, Sands tragically went missing while hiking on California's Mount San Antonio (Mount Baldy) during winter storms in January 2023.
