Archival Overview

Bulgarian-born School of Paris master draughtsman and painter whose delicate, shimmering pastel nudes and restless wanderings across Europe and the Americas made him a tragic legend.

Biographical Record

Jules Pascin (1885–1930 CE) studied in Vienna and Munich before arriving in Paris in 1905, becoming one of the most brilliant satirical draughtsmen of his generation.

Living restlessly between Paris, New York, Cuba, and North Africa, his canvases possessed an ethereal, pearlescent shimmer; on the day of his 1930 solo exhibition, he took his own life, and all Parisian galleries closed in mourning.
