Archival Overview
Influential Catholic statesman and financier who served twice as Prime Minister of Belgium (1871–1878, 1884), leading the Catholic victory in the School War that initiated thirty years of unbroken Catholic governance.
Biographical Record
After working in financial administration and the Court of Cassation, Malou was appointed Governor of Antwerp at age 34 before becoming Minister of Finance in 1845. He demonstrated financial wizardry in managing the state railway debt and consolidating municipal budgets.
Malou served as the ideological captain of the Catholic opposition during the First School War. His triumph in the June 1884 general elections swept the Catholics into power, allowing him to pass the 1884 Education Act restoring municipal subsidies to Catholic schools.
