Archival Overview
Passionate Walloon socialist statesman, lawyer, and art historian whose famous 1912 Lettre au Roi bluntly declared: 'Sire, il n'y a pas de Belges' (Sire, there are no Belgians), predicting Belgian federalism.
Biographical Record
Practicing law in Charleroi, Destrée defended miners and glassworkers during the bloody labor strikes of 1886. Elected socialist deputy in 1894, he fought for working-class culture, founded the Walloon Movement, and celebrated the art and distinct regional identity of Wallonia.
In August 1912, he addressed King Albert I in an open letter arguing that Belgium was composed of two distinct peoples—Flemings and Walloons—and advocating administrative decentralization. As Minister of Arts and Sciences (1919–1921), he created the Royal Academy of French Language and Literature and the National Fund for Science.
