"A city for sale and doomed to quick destruction, if only it can find a buyer!"

Archival Overview

Numidian king and military strategist who waged the protracted Jugurthine War against the Roman Republic, exposing Roman political corruption and famous for declaring 'A city for sale and doomed to perish if it finds a buyer!'

Biographical Record

Jugurtha (c. 160–104 BCE) was the illegitimate grandson of Masinissa, educated in classical warfare and renowned for his prowess as a cavalry officer under Scipio Aemilianus at the Siege of Numantia in Hispania. Seizing the throne of Numidia in 118 BCE, he challenged Roman dominance across North Africa.

For seven years (112–105 BCE), Jugurtha outfought and bribed Roman consular armies, utilizing hit-and-run cavalry tactics and desert fortresses like the Table of Jugurtha. Rome was forced to deploy its supreme generals Quintus Metellus and Gaius Marius. Betrayed by his father-in-law King Bocchus I of Mauretania, Jugurtha was paraded in chains in Marius's triumph and starved to death in Rome's Mamertine Prison.
