Archival Overview
Pioneering cabinet minister under Lester B. Pearson who spearheaded the creation of the Canada Pension Plan and Canadian Medicare in 1966.
Biographical Record
Julia Verlyn LaMarsh was born in Chatham, Ontario, and served in the Canadian Women's Army Corps during World War II as an intelligence translator. Graduating from Osgoode Hall Law School, she was elected to Parliament in Niagara Falls in 1960, becoming only the second woman in Canadian history to be appointed a federal cabinet minister.
As Minister of National Health and Welfare under Lester Pearson, LaMarsh was the formidable legislative battering ram who drafted and guided the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and the Medical Care Act (Medicare) through intense parliamentary opposition. As Secretary of State, she directed Canada's 1967 Centennial celebrations and established the Royal Commission on the Status of Women.
