Judith Leyster (1609–1660 CE) signed her canvases with a clever pun on her name: a shooting star ('Leid-ster' or leading star).

Running her own independent workshop with male pupils, she painted joyful musicians, drinkers, and children illuminated by flickering candle flames; her works were so masterly they were long misattributed to Frans Hals.
