Archival Overview

Scholarly King of Mauretania, raised in Rome by Octavian, who transformed Caesarea (Cherchell) into a jewel of Greco-Roman culture and authored influential treatises on geography, botany, and history.

Biographical Record

Juba II (c. 48 BCE – 23 CE) was the son of King Juba I of Numidia. Taken to Rome as a child following Caesar's victory at Thapsus, he was raised in the imperial household of Octavian (Augustus), receiving one of the most sophisticated classical educations of antiquity.

In 25 BCE, Augustus installed Juba II as King of Mauretania and arranged his marriage to Cleopatra Selene II, daughter of Mark Antony and Cleopatra VII. The royal couple built their capital Caesarea (Cherchell, Algeria) into a glorious maritime metropolis adorned with marble theaters, basilicas, and statues. A renowned polymath, Juba wrote encyclopedic works cited by Pliny the Elder and discovered the Canary Islands.
