Joseph Sarwuan Tarka was born on July 10, 1932, in Igbor, Benue State, of Tiv parentage. After qualifying as a teacher at Bauchi Teachers' Training College, he entered politics with passionate determination to ensure political representation and cultural autonomy for the non-Hausa minority groups of Nigeria's Middle Belt.
In 1957, Tarka was elected president of the United Middle Belt Congress (UMBC). Forging alliances with Chief Obafemi Awolowo's Action Group, he campaigned tirelessly before the Willink Commission for the creation of a Middle Belt State.
