Archival Overview
Visionary architect whose colossal masterpiece, the Palais de Justice of Brussels (1866–1883), was the largest building constructed in the nineteenth century, dominating the capital's skyline.
Biographical Record
Educated at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Poelaert served as City Architect of Brussels, designing the Column of the Congress (1850) and the Church of Saint Catherine.
In 1861, King Leopold I selected Poelaert's audacious Greco-Roman and Babylonian eclectic design for the new central law courts. Erected atop the Galgenberg hill over the working-class Marolles district, the mammoth stone edifice encompassed 26,000 square meters beneath a 104-meter dome, driving Poelaert to mental and physical exhaustion.
