Biographical Record

Joseph Lowery (1921-2020) guida le boycott des bus de Montgomery en 1955 avant de cofonder en 1957 la Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) avec Martin Luther King Jr., Fred Shuttlesworth et Ralph Abernathy. Il présida la SCLC pendant plus de vingt ans (1977-1997).

Militant infatigable de la non-violence, il fut arrêté devant l'ambassade sud-africaine à Washington pour réclamer la libération de Nelson Mandela. En 2009, il prononça la prière d'investiture du président Barack Obama. Il reçut la médaille présidentielle de la Liberté en 2009 pour six décennies de lutte pacifique pour la justice humaine.
