Archival Overview

First President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo upon independence in 1960, leader of the ABAKO movement, who governed through the catastrophic early years of the Congo Crisis.

Biographical Record

Trained as a Catholic seminarian and colonial clerk, Joseph Kasa-Vubu (c. 1917–1969) was elected president of the cultural and political association ABAKO in 1954. In January 1959, following banned ABAKO rallies, violent anti-colonial riots erupted in Leopoldville (Kinshasa), forcing Belgium to grant rapid independence.

On June 30, 1960, Kasa-Vubu became the Congo's first President, with Patrice Lumumba as Prime Minister. Caught in the vortex of Katangan secession, Cold War interference, and military mutiny, Kasa-Vubu dismissed Lumumba in September 1960 before being ousted in Mobutu Sese Seko's 1965 coup.
