Venerated as "Maran" (Our Master). Expelled from Spain in 1492, he settled in the mystical Galilean city of Safed, authoring the Beit Yosef and the Shulchan Aruch (The Prepared Table)—the universally authoritative code of Jewish halakhic law.

Biographical Record

Enduring the trauma of the Alhambra Decree in early childhood, Karo wandered across Portugal, Turkey, and the Ottoman Balkans before establishing his master academy in Safed alongside Isaac Luria and Moses Cordovero. Guided by a mystical voice (the Maggid), he combined deep Kabbalistic devotion with encyclopedic legal mastery.

His Shulchan Aruch, supplemented by Moses Isserles's Ashkenazi glosses, unified fragmented Jewish diaspora communities across continents, remaining the foundational standard for rabbinic jurisprudence down to the present day.
