Archival Overview
Aristocratic French counter-revolutionary commander who led the royalist Chouan uprising in Brittany and later brought a settlement of French royalist emigrés to Upper Canada in 1798.
Biographical Record
The Comte de Puisaye was a prominent general of the royalist counter-revolution during the French Revolution, commanding the Quiberon expedition of 1795. Following its defeat, he negotiated with British Prime Minister William Pitt to resettle displaced French royalist officers in Canada.
In 1798, Puisaye led forty French emigrés to Upper Canada, establishing the short-lived settlement of Windham near Markham and a military farming estate on the Niagara River at Niagara-on-the-Lake. Though the settlement dispersed, Puisaye's memoirs provided crucial primary accounts of the Chouan wars.
