Joseph Cardijn was the son of a coal merchant who vowed at his father's deathbed to dedicate his priesthood to working-class youth suffering exploitation in factories. In 1925, he founded the Jeunesse Ouvriere Chretienne (Young Christian Workers / YCW) in Brussels.

Cardijn created the revolutionary pedagogical method 'See, Judge, Act' (Regarder, Juger, Agir), empowering millions of young factory workers worldwide to analyze their conditions and take direct collective action for labor rights. His theology deeply influenced Catholic social teaching and the Second Vatican Council.
