Biographical Record
Thayendanegea, known in English as Joseph Brant, was born along the Ohio River to a prominent Mohawk family. Educated at Moor's Charity School in Connecticut, he became fluent in English, Latin, and Greek, translating the Gospel of Mark and the Book of Common Prayer into the Mohawk language.
During the American Revolutionary War, Brant served as captain in the British Army, skillfully commanding Six Nations and Loyalist forces on the northern frontier. Following the Treaty of Paris, he secured the 1784 Haldimand Grant of 675,000 acres along the Grand River in Upper Canada (Ontario), founding the Six Nations settlement at Brantford and defending Indigenous land rights until his death.
