Archival Overview
Visionary Quebec mechanical inventor and entrepreneur whose drive-wheel-and-track system conquered winter isolation, creating the snowmobile and the global Bombardier industrial empire.
Biographical Record
Joseph-Armand Bombardier was a self-taught mechanical prodigy from Valcourt, Quebec. Devastated in 1934 when his two-year-old son died of appendicitis during a blizzard because snowbound roads prevented reaching medical care, Bombardier resolved to conquer winter transportation.
In 1937, he patented a revolutionary rubber-toothed sprocket wheel and continuous track system that kept vehicles afloat on deep snow. He founded L'Auto-Neige Bombardier, manufacturing multi-passenger winter coaches and, in 1959, releasing the iconic light recreational Ski-Doo snowmobile. His company evolved into an international aerospace and transit manufacturing leader.
