Biographical Record
Jose Emilio Pacheco (1939–2014) was a member of Mexico's 'Generation of the Fifties'. In 1981, he published 'Las batallas en el desierto' ('Battles in the Desert'), a novella of childhood innocence lost amid the Americanization of Mexico City in the late 1940s.
His poetic collections, including 'No me preguntes como pasa el tiempo', combined classical metric restraint with conversational immediacy. He was awarded the Miguel de Cervantes Prize and the Queen Sofia Ibero-American Poetry Prize in 2009.
