Archival Overview
Foundational Cape Verdean poet whose landmark 1935 book 'Arquipelago' initiated modern Cape Verdean literature and co-founded the 'Claridade' cultural movement.
Biographical Record
Jorge Pedro Mauricio dos Reis Barbosa was born on May 22, 1902, in Praia on the island of Santiago. Working as a customs official on Sao Vicente and Sal, his quiet observation of island isolation and maritime departure shaped his poetic voice.
In 1935, Barbosa published Arquipelago, the foundational milestone of Cape Verdean poetry, discarding colonial Portuguese rhetorical flourishes for simple, melancholy verses that gave voice to drought, isolation, and the ache of emigration (saudade). Alongside Baltasar Lopes and Manuel Lopes, he co-founded Claridade in 1936, establishing the modern Cape Verdean literary identity.
