Biographical Record
Jónas Hallgrímsson was born on November 16, 1807, at Hraun in Öxnadalur. Educated at the Bessastaðir Latin school and the University of Copenhagen, he studied natural sciences, geology, and law, conducting extensive geographical surveys across Iceland.
In 1835 in Copenhagen, Hallgrímsson and three friends founded the revolutionary annual periodical Fjölnir, spearheading the romantic revival of Icelandic national consciousness and literary purity. He coined hundreds of modern Icelandic neologisms to replace Danish loanwords and composed immortal lyric poems like 'Gunnarshólmi' and 'Ég bið að heilsa'.
