Archival Overview
Beloved Boston Red Sox player, manager, coach, and goodwill ambassador whose sixty-year association with Fenway Park made him 'Mr. Red Sox' and gave his name to Fenway's right-field foul pole, 'Pesky's Pole'.
Biographical Record
Born to Croatian immigrants in Oregon, John Michael Paveskovich signed with the Red Sox in 1940. In his 1942 rookie season, he led the American League with 205 hits before sacrificing three prime years of his career to serve in the United States Navy during World War II.
Upon returning, Pesky recorded back-to-back 200-hit seasons in 1946 and 1947 alongside teammates Ted Williams and Bobby Doerr. He remained with the organization for over six decades as manager, coach, and beloved patriarch, witnessing the Red Sox break the eighty-six-year 'Curse of the Bambino' to win the World Series in 2004.
