Biographical Record
Juan Azarías Pacheco Kniping was born in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, and emigrated with his family to New York City in the late 1940s. A gifted flutist, percussionist, and arranger who studied at the Juilliard School, he pioneered the pachanga dance craze in the early 1960s with his charanga orchestra.
In 1964, Pacheco partnered with attorney Jerry Masucci to found Fania Records, the Motown of Latin music. Pacheco coined the umbrella term "salsa" to market the dynamic fusion of Cuban son, Puerto Rican bomba, and American jazz. As musical director of the Fania All-Stars, he brought together legends including Celia Cruz, Héctor Lavoe, Willie Colón, and Cheo Feliciano, performing legendary stadium concerts from Yankee Stadium to Zaire.
