Archival Overview
Legendary African-American cowboy who drove cattle north to Calgary in 1882, becoming one of the most celebrated horsemen, ranchers, and folk heroes of the Canadian western frontier.
Biographical Record
Born into slavery in the American South, Ware became an exceptionally skilled cowboy following emancipation, driving cattle herds up the historic trails to Montana. In 1882, he helped drive 3,000 head of cattle to the North-West Territories for the famous Cochrane Ranche near Calgary.
Ware settled in Alberta, establishing his own successful ranches at Millarville and the Red Deer River. Renowned for his superhuman physical strength, kindness, and mastery over untamed broncs, he helped develop modern steer-wrestling and was mourned by thousands at his 1905 funeral, one of the largest in early Calgary history.
