Archival Overview

Foremost portrait painter of his generation, celebrated for dazzling bravura brushwork and the controversial Portrait of Madame X.

Biographical Record

John Singer Sargent was an American expatriate artist regarded as the leading portrait painter of his generation. Born in Florence to American parents, he studied in Paris under Carolus-Duran before establishing an international reputation for breathtaking technical fluency, capturing the glamour and elegance of Edwardian high society with effortless bravura brushwork.

His notorious 1884 Salon portrait Madame X (Virginie Gautreau) provoked a public scandal over its sensual insolence, prompting Sargent to relocate permanently to London. Beyond magnificent commissioned oil portraits, Sargent was a virtuoso watercolourist who produced dazzling, light-filled landscapes across Europe and the Middle East, as well as monumental murals for the Boston Public Library.
