Biographical Record

John of Damascus (c. 676–749 CE) served as chief financial administrator in the Umayyad caliphal court before retiring to Mar Saba monastery near Jerusalem.

During the Byzantine Iconoclastic controversy, he defended the veneration of holy images on the grounds of Christ's real incarnation: 'I do not worship matter, I worship the Creator of matter.'
