Archival Overview
Transformative administrator and Minister for Transport and Internal Security who introduced the renowned 'Michuki Rules' that tamed Kenya's chaotic public transport sector.
Biographical Record
John Njoroge Michuki was born on December 1, 1932, in Muguru, Kangema. Educated at Mang'u High School and Worcester College, Oxford, he served as one of the first indigenous District Commissioners in colonial Kenya before rising to Permanent Secretary to the Treasury under Kenyatta.
Serving as Executive Chairman of the Kenya Commercial Bank, Michuki was elected to parliament for Kangema in 1983. In 2003, as Minister for Transport, he courageously enacted the 'Michuki Rules', compelling public minibuses (matatus) to install speed governors, passenger seat belts, and uniform fares, dramatically slashing road fatalities overnight. He later rehabilitated the Nairobi River and restored public order as Minister of Internal Security.
