"Imagine all the people living life in peace... You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans."

Archival Overview

Co-founder of The Beatles and legendary songwriter whose creative partnership with Paul McCartney redefined popular music, whose 1971 anthem Imagine became humanity's universal prayer for global peace.

Biographical Record

John Winston Lennon (1940–1980) formed The Quarrymen in Liverpool in 1956, which evolved into The Beatles. Alongside Paul McCartney, Lennon formed the most successful, celebrated songwriting partnership in history. Leading 'Beatlemania' across the globe, Lennon drove the band from teenage pop into groundbreaking studio artistry with Strawberry Fields Forever, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and A Day in the Life.

Embarking on a solo career with his wife Yoko Ono, Lennon became the global symbol of the anti-war peace movement, staging 'Bed-Ins for Peace' and releasing 'Give Peace a Chance'. In 1971, sitting at a white grand piano in his Berkshire home, Lennon composed Imagine, a secular hymn envisioning a world without borders, greed, or war that stands as one of the most recorded and performed songs in modern history.
