John Knox (c. 1514–1572 CE) survived nineteen months as a French galley slave before serving as royal chaplain to King Edward VI in England and studying under Calvin in Geneva.

Returning to Scotland in 1559, he mobilized the Scottish nobility and people to establish the Presbyterian Church, drafting the Scots Confession and confronting Queen Mary on divine sovereignty.
