"I didn't take the fish out of the goddamned water! It's a tragic day for our people, but we have to save what remains."

Archival Overview

Colourful Newfoundland political giant whose razor-sharp parliamentary wit, Free Trade negotiations, and painful 1992 Northern Cod Moratorium declaration defined an era.

Biographical Record

John Carnell Crosbie was born into a prominent St. John's merchant dynasty. After serving in Joey Smallwood's and Frank Moores' provincial cabinets, Crosbie entered federal politics in 1976, quickly becoming the most formidable debater in the House of Commons. As Minister of Finance in Joe Clark's 1979 government, his budget famously fell by six votes.

Under Brian Mulroney, Crosbie served as Minister of International Trade, aggressively spearheading the 1988 Canada-US Free Trade Agreement. As Minister of Fisheries and Oceans in July 1992, facing ecological collapse of fish stocks, Crosbie faced angry crowds in Bay Bulls to announce the painful Northern Cod Moratorium. He later served as Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador.
