Archival Overview
Industrial titan whose vast ironworks and engineering complexes at Seraing (Liège) made Belgium the first industrialized nation on the European continent and manufactured Europe's first steam locomotives.
Biographical Record
Son of British textile mechanic William Cockerill, John arrived in Verviers as a boy. In 1817, with King William I of the Netherlands, he purchased the former summer palace of the Prince-Bishops of Liège at Seraing, transforming it into the world's largest integrated iron, coal, and machine manufacturing center.
Cockerill built continental Europe's first coke blast furnace and manufactured 'Le Belge' in 1835, the first steam locomotive constructed in mainland Europe. His industrial empire supplied steamships, cannons, bridges, and rails worldwide, earning him the title of the industrial father of Belgium.
