Biographical Record

Trained in classical rhetoric by Libanius in Antioch, Chrysostom chose monastic seclusion in Syrian caves before being ordained and gaining renown for his blistering sermons defending the poor. In 398 CE, he was elevated to Archbishop of Constantinople against his personal inclination.

His fierce denunciations of court luxury and clerical greed provoked Empress Eudoxia to orchestrate his banishment to the Black Sea borderlands, where he succumbed to forced marches in inclement weather, uttering his immortal dying words of gratitude.
