Archival Overview
Eminent agricultural scientist who served as premier of Manitoba for two decades (1922–1942), leading non-partisan coalition governments through the Great Depression.
Biographical Record
John Bracken was an internationally respected agricultural scientist and professor of field husbandry who served as president of the Manitoba Agricultural College. In 1922, following the rise of the United Farmers of Manitoba, Bracken was recruited as a non-partisan compromise figure to lead the provincial government, serving as Premier of Manitoba for twenty consecutive years.
Bracken governed with scrupulous integrity and fiscal pragmatism, navigating the catastrophic drought and economic collapse of the 1930s by constructing grand non-partisan coalition cabinets. In 1942, he was drafted to lead the national Conservative Party, insisting the party add "Progressive" to its name to reflect western reform ideals.
