Biographical Record
Johannes Vilhelm Jensen was born on January 20, 1873, in Farsø, Himmerland. The son of a veterinary surgeon, he studied medicine before choosing a literary career influenced by evolutionary biology, Charles Darwin, and Walt Whitman.
Jensen made his historic breakthrough with Kongens Fald (The Fall of the King, 1900–1901), a harrowing historical novel depicting King Christian II and the psychological tragedy of Danish national vacillation. He wrote the six-volume evolutionary epic Den lange Rejse (The Long Journey, 1908–1922) and introduced American-style free-verse modernism to Danish poetry with his 1906 collection Digte. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1944.
