Archival Overview
Distinguished Norwegian Romantic poet, aesthetician, and literary critic whose polemic sonnet cycle Norges Dæmring sparked the historic culture clash with Henrik Wergeland.
Biographical Record
Johan Sebastian Cammermeyer Welhaven was born on December 22, 1807, in Bergen. After enrolling at the Royal Frederick University in Christiania, he became the intellectual leader of the conservative-aesthetic 'Intelligence Party', arguing that Norwegian culture must maintain organic continuity with European humanism and Danish culture.
Welhaven published his famous satirical sonnet cycle Norges Dæmring (The Dawn of Norway, 1834), which criticized narrow provincial nationalism and provoked a fierce culture war with Henrik Wergeland. Appointed Professor of Philosophy in 1846, Welhaven wrote some of the most formally melodious nature lyrics and romances in the Norwegian language, including 'Åsgårdsreien' and 'Digtets Aand'.
