Biographical Record
Johan Nygaardsvold was born on September 6, 1879, in Hommelvik, Sør-Trøndelag. Working as a sawmill laborer and lumberjack in Norway and Canada, he became an influential parliamentary leader of the Labour Party.
In 1935, Nygaardsvold formed the historic 'Crisis Government', introducing old-age pensions, unemployment insurance, and public works programs. When Nazi Germany invaded in 1940, his cabinet evacuated King Haakon VII to London, governing in exile for five arduous years while financing the Allied merchant shipping fleet (Nortraship) and free Norwegian armed forces until returning triumphantly in 1945.
