Biographical Record
Johan Ludvig Runeberg was born on February 5, 1804, in Jakobstad (Pietarsaari) into a Finland-Swedish sea captain's family. Educated at the Imperial Academy of Turku, he served as a lector in Greek and Roman literature at the gymnasium in Porvoo.
Runeberg inspired Finnish patriotism with epic poems like Elgskyttarne (The Elk Shooters) and Kung Fjalar. His immortal masterpiece, the two-part ballad cycle Fänrik Ståls sägner (The Tales of Ensign Stål, 1848 and 1860), chronicled the heroic Finnish War of 1808–1809 against Russia; its opening poem 'Vårt land' was set to music by Fredrik Pacius and adopted as the national anthem. On his birthday, February 5, Finland celebrates Runeberg's Day by eating traditional almond Runeberg tarts.
