Archival Overview
Virtuosic and influential American heavy metal drummer and co-founder of masked metal titans Slipknot (designated "#1"), voted the greatest drummer of the past 25 years by Rhythm magazine for his blistering blast beats and double-bass speed.
Biographical Record
Nathan Jonas Jordison was born in Des Moines, Iowa, receiving his first drum kit at age eight. In 1995, he co-founded Slipknot with Shawn Crahan and Paul Gray, helping name the band after one of their early songs and coining the term "Maggots" for their rabid fanbase. Wearing a blank white Japanese Kabuki mask and numbered "#1", Jordison served as the rhythmic engine and primary songwriter for their explosive self-titled debut (1999) and Iowa (2001).
Renowned for his astonishing speed, polyrhythmic complexity, and spinning 360-degree upside-down drum solos on a rotating hydraulic rig during live concerts, Jordison also played guitar in horror-punk band Murderdolls and filled in on drums for Metallica, Korn, and Ministry. In 2010, Rhythm magazine readers voted him the best drummer of the last twenty-five years. He later revealed he battled acute transverse myelitis, a neurological disease that impaired his legs, battling back to drum again before his death at age forty-six.
