Archival Overview
Toronto-born comic book artist who co-created Superman with Jerry Siegel in 1938, launching the global superhero comic book industry.
Biographical Record
Joseph Shuster was born in Toronto, where he worked as a newsboy for the Toronto Daily Star, drawing his first sketches on scrap butcher paper. In 1924, his family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he met writer Jerry Siegel in high school, bonding over science fiction pulp magazines.
Together, they created Superman, who debuted in Action Comics #1 in June 1938. Shuster modeled Superman's heroic posture on Douglas Fairbanks and based the original skyline of the fictional city of Metropolis on his childhood memories of Toronto, with the Daily Star inspiring the Daily Planet. He was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame.
