Archival Overview

Virtuoso American jazz drummer of the Dave Brubeck Quartet celebrated for his unmatched mastery of odd time signatures, immortalized by his 5/4 drum solo on Take Five.

Biographical Record

Joseph Albert Morello suffered from severely impaired vision from birth and was a child violin prodigy before switching to drums at age fifteen after hearing Jascha Heifetz. Studying with George Lawrence Stone, he developed peerless finger-control and hand speed.

Joining the Dave Brubeck Quartet in 1956, Morello mastered complex polyrhythms. On the 1959 historic platinum album 'Time Out', his iconic drum solo on Paul Desmond's 'Take Five' in 5/4 meter proved that irregular time signatures could swing effortlessly, making the track the best-selling jazz single of all time.
