Jerzy Popiełuszko

Jerzy Popiełuszko was born Alfons Popiełuszko in the village of Okopy near Suchowola in northeastern Poland. After graduating from the Warsaw Major Seminary and completing mandatory military service in a punitive army unit for clerics, he was ordained a Catholic priest in 1972 by Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński. In August 1980, when strikes erupted at the Warsaw Steelworks (Huta Warszawa) in support of Gdańsk shipyard workers, Father Popiełuszko was sent to celebrate Mass at the factory gates, forging an indelible bond with the workers.

When General Wojciech Jaruzelski declared martial law in December 1981 and outlawed the independent trade union Solidarity, Father Popiełuszko stepped into the spiritual leadership vacuum. Assigned to St. Stanisław Kostka Church in Warsaw's Żoliborz district, he began celebrating monthly 'Masses for the Fatherland.' His sermons, broadcast nationwide over Radio Free Europe, drew tens of thousands of factory workers, intellectuals, and students, urging them to 'overcome evil with good' and remain peaceful in the face of brutal state violence.

Despite relentless harassment, fabricated weapons charges, and assassination attempts by the communist Ministry of Internal Affairs, Popiełuszko refused offers to flee to Rome. On 19 October 1984, while returning from Bydgoszcz, his car was ambushed by three officers of the internal security service (SB). Popiełuszko was bludgeoned, tied with stones, and thrown alive into the Vistula River reservoir near Włocławek. Over 250,000 mourners attended his funeral, which became a peaceful turning point that doomed the moral authority of the communist regime.
