Archival Overview

Legendary Métis-Peigan scout, guide, and interpreter whose unparalleled geographical knowledge and diplomatic prowess guided the North-West Mounted Police across the western plains and facilitated Treaty 7.

Biographical Record

Son of a Scots fur trader and a Kainai (Blood) Blackfoot woman, Potts was raised among the fur posts and First Nations of the plains, becoming an accomplished bison hunter and warrior known as Bear Child (Ky-yo-kosi). In 1874, the newly formed North-West Mounted Police hired Potts as their chief guide, navigating them safely to establish Fort Macleod.

For over two decades, Potts served as the indispensable cultural and diplomatic liaison between the Mounted Police and Plains chiefs including Crowfoot and Red Crow, maintaining peace throughout the region during turbulent times of settlement and treaty negotiations.
