Archival Overview
Flemish sculptor and court artist to Archdukes Albert and Isabella who cast Brussels' most iconic and beloved civic monument, the bronze Manneken Pis fountain, in 1619.
Biographical Record
Admitted to the Brussels Guild of Saint Luke, Duquesnoy established an esteemed sculptural workshop that executed ornate altarpieces, tabernacles, and tomb effigies across Brabant. In 1619, the City of Brussels commissioned him to replace a decaying stone fountain statue of a urinating boy at the corner of Rue de l'Étuve.
His charming 61-centimeter bronze figure of Petit Julien (Manneken Pis) quickly became the irreverent symbol of Brussels civic humor and defiant spirit. He also created the monumental stone sacrament house in the Church of Saint Martin in Aalst.
