Biographical Record
Jens Peter Jacobsen was born on April 7, 1847, in Thisted, Jutland. A brilliant student of botany at the University of Copenhagen, he was awarded a gold medal for his research on freshwater algae and translated Darwin's works into Danish, introducing evolutionary science to Scandinavia.
Turning to fiction, Jacobsen created a new lyrical prose style characterized by exquisite sensory detail and psychological realism. His historical novel Fru Marie Grubbe (1876) and his autobiographical masterpiece Niels Lyhne (1880) exerted a profound influence across Europe, directly inspiring Rainer Maria Rilke, Thomas Mann, and Sigmund Freud before Jacobsen died of tuberculosis at age thirty-eight.
