Biographical Record
Jens Ingvald Bjørneboe was born on October 9, 1920, in Kristiansand. An artistic rebel, he studied painting and Waldorf education before launching a literary career marked by fierce polemics against the Norwegian penal system, school dogma, and militarism.
In 1957, his novel The Evil Shepherd exposed institutional abuse in youth prisons, and in 1966 his novel Without a Stitch was famously prosecuted in a landmark obscenity trial. His crowning achievement was the philosophical trilogy The History of Bestiality—comprising Moment of Freedom (1966), The Powder Magazine (1969), and The Silence (1973)—which examined institutionalized violence across Western history.
